“Oh My! I need to brush my teeth. My breath stinks!” How embarrassing! Everyone has had bad breath at least once in their life. However, some people don’t realize that their breath stinks. Unfortunately, people within close contact usually don’t like to mention to someone about their bad breath. It’s an embarrassing issue! So knowing about a few simple things that can cause bad breath, or even the chronic “Halitosis”, you’ll be much better prepared to keep way from having such an embarrassing episode or confrontation of bad breath.

Things That Can Cause Bad Breath

Onions and garlic are the most common odor causing examples of foods with such potent smells that they often remain on one’s breath for a long time. Brushing teeth and using mouth fresheners may offer no more than short-lived relief, because traces find their way in to the exhaled breath from blood, after the ingredients have been digested. However, these kinds of aromatic foods have become so notorious that many people now avoid them as much as possible.

Not only can bad smelling foods circulate through the blood, food can also get stuck on or in between teeth after meals. If a person doesn’t brush their teeth soon after eating, the food can rot causing bacteria to grow inside the mouth which can cause bad breath.

Some people have a hard time with the metabolic breaking down of certain oral bacteria. In varying degrees, it can affect about 25% of the population! A doctors visit would be a good start to fixing this condition.

Gum and mouth diseases can also cause terrible bad breath. A dentist would be able to find the best solution to those issues.

Stopping the Causes of Bad Breath.

Since there are several different reasons for bad breath, visiting a doctor and even a dentist would be the best way to discover the main cause for each person. Blood tests can help finding the root problem, and regular dental check-ups and cleanings can help find chronic odor problems. However the case, since Halitosis can be a very serious condition, it is strongly suggested to get a medical evaluation. But while you are waiting for your doctors appointment, there are several things you can do at home to help!

Staying away from tobacco, foods with strong odors, and keeping your mouth and body healthy will probably suffice in your battle against bad breath. Although we often think of kids needing reminders, adults need them too. So…remember to brush and floss daily!
